In 1929, Dr. Maria Montessori established AMI,
Association Montessori Internationale, to preserve the
integrity of her life's work and ensure that it would be
continued after her death. Dr. Montessori said, “the
education of even a very small child…Does not aim at
preparing him for school, but for life.” She discovered
that the mind of the child, which in the first six years of
life, is different from that at any later stage of
development, she called this the absorbent mind.
In a Montessori school setting, such as KIM School, of
mixed ages that is non-graded, the children spontaneously
and independently use materials designed by Dr.
Montessori. The children independently choose their own
activities and develop practical and intellectual abilities
through personal discovery and exploration of language,
mathematics, geography, geometry, art and music. The
